Charlie, Mommy, and Gigi journeyed to Tulsa the last weekend in August to see Uncle Alex and Aunt Molly. We had a great time checking out their new place, going to the pool, eating delicous pizza, and checking out their new church. It was great to get to spend some time with them.
Charlie continues to grow and change faster than we can keep up. As you can see from the picture above, he's already out-grown the baby swing and insists on the big boy swing. He does a pretty good job of it too! He's already in some 24 month pants due to his ever-increasing height, even though they aren't a perfect fit in the waist yet. Every day he adds new words to his vocabulary (though it takes a trained ear to translate!) and he continues to sign, learning new signs for words he can't quite say yet. My favorite new word is "Daddy." Rick has been "Dada" for months, but Charlie has started calling him Daddy. It's adorable.
Charlie is a challenge in many ways, but one of the things Rick and I count as a true blessing is his ability to entertain himself. He loves to find a toy and play, which he can often do for extended periods of time. We are thankful that he can play with us or by himself and be perfectly content both ways, and as we spend time with other kids his age, we realize this is somewhat rare, as many children have become quite attention seeking by this age. (Obviously, Charlie gets this from his dad and not his mom. :)
About a month ago, we got the news that Charlie was "severely far-sighted" as the doctor put it. He has a bit of a lazy eye, which we first noticed a month or two ago, so Rick called his eye doctor. He recommended a pediatric optometrist, whom we saw at the beginning of August. Rick has pretty severe vision issues and I am far-sighted, so Charlie's diagnosis of "severely far-sighted" is a pretty good mix of the two of us. However, to illustrate how bad Charlie is, I'll tell you that my adult prescription is +3.5. As a 20 month old, his is +5.5. We ordered his glasses a few weeks ago and they just came in. They are adorable, as you can see, but we are having trouble with Charlie keeping them on. In fact, these two pictures are the only ones we've been able to snap, and you'll notice that in both, Rick is restraining his arms and he's watching TV, which is one of his favorite things. We are visiting with a specialist later this weekend who is going to help us learn some strategies to help Charlie learn how to wear his glasses. We'll keep you posted, and in the meantime, we'd appreciate your prayers as we take on this new challenge!
**UPDATE: Later that day Charlie kept his glasses on for two thirty-second intervals. We are calling that a success and are working every day to increase the amount of time he keeps his glasses on.
