How Charlie Gets Super-Cool New Stuff

When you have a little boy who is this adorable
it can be very tempting to spend money on cute clothes and brand new toys. Since we are a 1.25 income family, we have to exercise some serious control over our finances in this area. How do we do it?

1. Charlie has two sets of wonderful grandparents who spoil him rotten and make sure he never goes without. :) A perfect example is his swimming ensemble from last year:
You can't see them, but there are matching sandals as well. :)

2. We accept hand-me-downs. Several of my friends at work have young boys and have graciously given us their gently used, brand name tops, shorts, pants, and shoes. In fact, a good half of Charlie's closet (and some of my favorite outfits) are hand-me-downs. He's wearing hand-me-downs in these pictures as well:
3. We yard sale. Check out the picture below. The rug is new and was $1. The sippy cup from which he is drinking was in a free bin, and I got four more this weekend for a grand total of $.75. The rings toy was $1.50 (a little steep, but something I've wanted him to have and even contemplated buying new) and the popper toy thing with the balls in it was $.50. The train engine was $.10 and the rest of the toys, as well as his shirt, are hand-me-downs. The table and chair were gifts, so our grand total for all baby items you see here was $3.10.
